Anambra Implements Minimum Wage and Pension Benefits

Governor Soludo Announces New Minimum Wage

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has introduced a new minimum wage of N70,000 for workers in the state. Soludo confirmed that this decision, effective immediately, means no Anambra worker will earn below N70,000, with potential increases up to N84,000 following government tabulations. The announcement was made after a meeting with labour leaders at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia on Friday evening.

State Pensioners to Receive Monthly Cash Award

In addition to the minimum wage increase, Soludo also approved a N10,000 monthly cash award for state pensioners. He explained that this interim award aims to support pensioners until a full pension review is completed. Soludo emphasised his empathy for pensioners who, he noted, are often overlooked in discussions about wage adjustments.

Commitment to State Security Strengthened

During the announcement, Soludo assured the public of Anambra’s commitment to improved security measures. He revealed plans for the state to acquire new security vehicles to support vigilante groups and other agencies. These measures, he said, demonstrate the government’s determination to secure the state and create a safe working environment for its citizens.

Encouragement for Workers’ Pension Planning

Governor Soludo also encouraged workers to adopt a contributory pension scheme, which he described as essential for future financial security. He urged state workers to join the scheme, suggesting it would mitigate pension challenges in later years. Labour leaders, present at the meeting, acknowledged the governor’s pro-worker stance and commitment to their welfare.

Labour Leaders Express Gratitude

Representatives from various unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), expressed their appreciation to Soludo. NLC Chairman Humphrey Nwafor praised the governor for his worker-friendly policies and highlighted Soludo’s donation of land for the construction of the state’s Workers’ House, a longstanding request.
