Anambra Leaders Condemn Attack in Agu-Isioye

Nawfia community leaders strongly condemn Monday’s attack in Agu-Isioye that resulted in four deaths. Chief Daniel Okoye, President-General, and traditional ruler Igwe Daniel Obelle denounce the violence. They describe the act as an “abomination” and demand justice. The leaders call for peace and urge authorities to investigate the incident swiftly. The leaders have urged for calm and stressed the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means rather than violence.

Youths Lured into Deadly Trap

Armed men lured local youths and residents with the pretence of buying land, intending to attack them. Once gathered, the assailants opened fire, instantly killing four people. Several others managed to escape despite sustaining injuries. The attack left the community in shock and fear of further violence. This has raised tension in the community, with accusations initially pointing toward people from Nawfia as the culprits.

Leaders Deny Involvement of Nawfia Community

Reacting to the accusations, the Nawfia community leaders issued a joint statement on Tuesday, denying any involvement of their people in the attack. They criticised an unnamed Enugu-Ukwu resident for making hasty accusations without waiting for an official police investigation. The leaders described these claims as inflammatory and insensitive, aimed at creating further unrest.

Community’s Call for Justice

The Nawfia leaders expressed their sympathy for the victims and their families, praying for peace to return to the area. They urged law enforcement agencies to take swift action to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice. They believe such measures will deter future acts of violence and restore calm to the community.

Land Dispute at the Centre of Conflict

According to the community leaders, land disputes in the Agu Anaocha region have long been a source of tension, worsened by the activities of land speculators and grabbers. They have called on the state government to intervene and address the underlying issues contributing to the recurring violence in the area.

Appeal for Calm and Dialogue

The leaders emphasised that Nawfia is a law-abiding community that values dialogue over violence. They reiterated their commitment to peaceful coexistence and urged all parties involved to seek resolution through legal means rather than taking matters into their own hands.
