Alarming Presence in Rano Emirate
Citizens of the Rano Emirate in Kano have expressed alarm over armed individuals’ presence in the emirate’s headquarters since Sunday. Recent legal changes affecting the structure of Kano’s traditional emirates heightened these concerns.
Recent Changes to Traditional Governance
The state House of Assembly repealed the Kano Emirate Law 2019 on May 23, 2024, resulting in the dissolution of the Rano Emirate, established by former Governor Umar Ganduje. This dissolution led to the dismissal of emirs and significant unrest in the region.
Security Concerns at the Palace
Subsequently, a letter to the state Police Commissioner brought to light the precarious situation at the palace, where armed youths have stationed themselves without clear motives. This development not only poses a serious threat to the security of lives and property but also undermines recent police directives aimed at limiting non-state security activities.
Community’s Peaceful History Under Threat
The Rano Emirate has a history of peace, acknowledged by local citizens and security agencies alike. However, the dissolution of the emirates has triggered recent disturbances, introducing tension and dissatisfaction among residents who feel their voices as stakeholders are being ignored.
Legal and Public Responses
Despite the tensions, the community respects the ongoing legal process, as the matter of the emirates is currently under judiciary review. The residents of Rano commit to upholding the court’s decisions, reinforcing their trust in legal resolutions to this governance crisis.
