Atiku Abubakar Sounds Alarm on Democracy’s Peril

In a compelling statement, Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has urged the ruling APC to refrain from using security agencies to harass or detain members of the political opposition.

Abubakar, who has chaired several committees and initiatives during his time in administration, praised the ability of his former government to listen to divergent opinions. He went on to state that this quality not only enriches democracy but also subjects ideas to a variety of viewpoints. Consequently, this leads to the refinement and effective execution of those ideas.

“As a foremost leader in the political space, I understand the frustration of a younger generation with a country of so much promise, so little delivery, and a gloomy outlook for the future,” Abubakar said. He called for restraint and urged leaders not to heat up the polity unnecessarily.

Concerns Over Suppression

The statement comes amidst recent revelations suggesting potential suppression of voices and trumped-up allegations against opposition figures, which Abubakar finds deeply troubling. “A vibrant democracy thrives not when dissent is silenced but when it is listened to, even if it makes those in authority uncomfortable,” he added.

Democracy’s Bedrock

Abubakar emphasised that the bedrock of any thriving democratic society is its ability to protect and respect contrarian viewpoints. He warned that arresting or silencing members of opposition for contrived charges is an affront to the principles of democracy. And a grave injustice to the people who rely on the system for representation and justice.

A Call to Unite by Atiku Abubakar

The former Vice President urged Nigerians to unite in upholding democratic principles. Subsequently, he urged them to make sure they allow every voice, no matter how contrary, its rightful place in the discourse. “The essence of democracy is not about comfort for those in power but about ensuring justice, liberty, and equality for all,” he concluded.

Atiku Abubakar is currently seeking justice, carrying the hopes of millions of Nigerians who voted for a change. “Democracy is a collective responsibility, and I urge Nigerians to never lose their voice or let themselves be cowed into silence,” he said.
