Tragic Ambush in Baure Village
Bandits launched a violent attack on a joint security team in Baure village, Safana Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, leaving 21 people dead. The victims, comprising members of the Community Watch Corps (CWC) and vigilante groups, were reportedly ambushed while returning from a condolence visit on January 7, 2025. The Katsina State Police Command described the attack as “dastardly,” highlighting the growing insecurity in the region.

A Baure resident alleged the security personnel were attempting to confront the bandits, who have long controlled the area. In a separate development, reports from Zamfara State reveal that villages in Tsafe West have been ordered to pay a levy of ₦172.7 million by gunmen. The demands include in-kind contributions such as bags of soybeans, with threats of violence for non-compliance. These incidents further illustrate the pervasive influence of bandit groups across northern Nigeria.
Government and Judiciary Under Scrutiny
Critics have raised concerns over the judicial system’s role in addressing banditry. Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal previously criticized the judiciary for granting bail to suspected bandit leaders.
