Xavi’s Final Match as Barcelona Manager

Barcelona sacks Xavi haven decided to part ways with him as Hansi is set to replace Xavi. The 44-year-old will lead the team for the last time on Sunday, as they face Sevilla in their final La Liga match of the season. Club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco informed Xavi of his dismissal during a meeting on Friday, despite his contract running until 2025.

Contract Extension and Sudden Exit

Xavi had previously announced his intention to leave Barcelona in January. However, Laporta persuaded Xavi to stay in April, but this extension was short-lived due to his recent comments. Xavi’s remarks about the club’s financial struggles reportedly upset Laporta, ultimately leading to the decision to terminate his contract.

Barcelona expressed their gratitude towards Xavi for his efforts since taking over as coach in 2021. Under his management, Barcelona secured the La Liga title and the Spanish Cup during his first full season. Despite this success, the team struggled this term, falling 12 points behind Real Madrid and exiting the Champions League at the quarter-final stage

Hansi Flick Set to Take Over

The club announced a “new structure” soon, with Hansi Flick set to replace Xavi as the new manager. Flick, unemployed since his sacking by Germany in September 2023, brings vast experience, having led Bayern Munich to a treble in 2020.

Flick’s Managerial Background

Flick’s tenure as Germany’s national team manager ended with him being the first to be sacked since the role’s creation in 1926. He managed only 12 wins out of 25 matches. His successful tenure at Bayern Munich, winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League, is expected to bring fresh perspectives.

Support and Criticism

Sevilla boss Quique Sanchez Flores criticised Barcelona’s treatment of Xavi, likening it to how they handled Ronald Koeman and Lionel Messi. Flores expressed his disappointment at how the club treats its legends and doubted the validity of the criticisms directed at Xavi. Barcelona will end the season in second place behind Real Madrid, with Xavi having a 63% win ratio from his 141 games as manager.
