Benue Tailors Lament Low Patronage Ever on a Festive Period

Economic Struggles Impacting Tailoring Businesses in Benue

Tailors in Benue State have expressed deep concerns over the unusually low patronage ahead of the 2024 Christmas and New Year celebrations. In interviews conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria in Makurdi, several tailors revealed that this year’s festive season has been one of the toughest they have faced in recent times. The economic difficulties gripping the nation have led many customers to prioritize essential needs over spending on new clothes, drastically affecting business for local tailors.

Customers’ Prioritization of Essentials Over Clothing

John Agbe, a tailor based in Makurdi, pointed out that the harsh economic climate has forced people to focus on more pressing expenditures, such as food, rent, and utilities, rather than spending on clothing. As a result, tailoring shops across the region have seen a significant decline in orders, leaving many tailors struggling to sustain their livelihoods. Agbe lamented that with few customers visiting his shop, some tailors may be forced to close their businesses, either temporarily or permanently, if the situation does not improve.

Tailors Call for Support Amid Economic Downturn

Ruth Ahii, another tailor in Benue, described the condition as critical and urged the government and other stakeholders to intervene with support to help them survive the challenging period. Ahii expressed optimism that with proper assistance, the tailoring sector could continue to contribute to the local economy and provide valuable services to the community. She stressed the importance of support for small businesses to ensure their survival during economic downturns.

Rising Costs of Materials Worsen the Situation

Mr. Joseph Jeremiah, a fellow tailor, echoed Agbe’s concerns, noting that the ongoing economic hardship has significantly reduced the disposable income available for non-essential purchases like clothing. Jeremiah added that the downturn has also made it increasingly difficult for tailors to source high-quality materials at affordable prices. The rising cost of raw materials has further squeezed profit margins, making it harder for tailors to remain financially viable during the festive season.

Yuletide Disappointment for Tailors in Benue

As the Yuletide period typically brings a surge in demand for new clothes and tailoring services, the lack of patronage this year has left many in the industry feeling disheartened. With little hope of a significant rebound before the holidays, the tailors fear that the trend may continue into the coming months. This situation is not only affecting their earnings but also their ability to support their families during what should be a celebratory season.

A Call for Economic Reforms to Support Small Businesses

The experiences of tailors in Benue serve as a reflection of the broader economic challenges facing small businesses across Nigeria. Many entrepreneurs are struggling to stay afloat as inflation and rising costs of living continue to weigh on both consumers and business owners. For tailors like Agbe, Ahii, and Jeremiah, the hope remains that increased government intervention and a focus on economic recovery can provide some relief and enable them to weather the storm.
