Ohanaeze Not Informed
Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s President-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, stated on Tuesday that the organisation has not received any formal notice regarding Biafra Heroes Day, planned by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Despite IPOB’s declaration of a sit-at-home across the South-East on May 30, Iwuanyanwu mentioned that he had not seen any official statement from IPOB yet.
IPOB’s Sit-at-Home Directive
IPOB announced that May 30 would be a sit-at-home day to honour those who died during the 1967-1970 civil war. In their statement, IPOB emphasised that there would be restrictions on movements and businesses would not operate on that day. This directive aims to commemorate the sacrifices made by the Igbo people during the conflict.
Ohanaeze’s Response
Iwuanyanwu noted that while he had not seen IPOB’s statement, he planned to review it once received. Meanwhile, a senior member of Ohanaeze expressed concern over the sit-at-home directive, describing it as counterproductive. He highlighted the disruption it causes, particularly for students taking exams, and the economic impact on the region.
Concerns Over Security
There are also security concerns surrounding the sit-at-home order. Recently, reports indicated that the police arrested individuals carrying ammunition intended to enforce the sit-at-home. Ohanaeze urged security agencies to ensure the safety of residents, especially students sitting for exams on that day.
Police Assurance
The police spokesman in Anambra, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, assured residents of their safety, encouraging them to go about their daily activities. He stressed that adequate security measures are in place to protect lives and properties during the sit-at-home period.
IPOB’s Firm Stance
IPOB remains firm on its decision, stating that all activities in Biafra Land will be halted from 6 am to 6 pm on May 30. The group reiterated the importance of remembering those who fought for Biafra’s freedom, insisting that no government or security agency has the right to harass citizens during the event.
