Burkina Faso Takes Action Against Former Leaders
Burkina Faso’s transitional government, under Captain Ibrahim Traore, froze the assets of former president Paul Henri Damiba and 112 others. Minister of Economy Dr. Aboubacar Nakanabo signed the decree on November 19, 2024, citing destabilisation concerns.
Individuals Targeted by Sanctions
The sanctions focus on prominent political and military figures, including former Foreign Ministers Djibril Bassolé and Alpha Barry. Journalist Newton Ahmed Barry and ex-deputy mayor Aziz Diallo are also targeted by the decree. Dismissed military officers like Ahmed Kinda, Yves Didier Bamouni, and Romeo Ouoba are among those affected by these sanctions. These individuals are suspected of conspiring against the current regime, undermining the country’s stability.
Link to Armed Terrorist Groups
The asset freezes extend beyond political figures, also affecting armed terrorist groups operating in Burkina Faso. This includes the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), the Macina Liberation Front, and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), all of whom have been active in the country’s ongoing security crisis. The sanctions are part of the government’s strategy to cut off resources to those involved in efforts to destabilise the state.
Damiba’s Role in Alleged Plot
The move to freeze Damiba’s assets follows his dismissal from the military, along with other senior officers, for “conspiracy against state security.” Damiba, who was ousted from power in January 2022, is currently in exile in Togo. His alleged involvement in efforts to disrupt the transition government has sparked further political tension, leading to the government’s push for his extradition.
Negotiations for Extradition
The Burkinabe government intends to pursue Damiba’s extradition from Togo, where he has sought refuge after his ousting. Captain Traore confirmed on national radio that his government is negotiating with Togolese authorities to bring Damiba back. These discussions aim to hold the former leader accountable for his alleged role in the destabilisation plot against Burkina Faso.
A Tough Stand on National Security
Burkina Faso’s actions against former officials and suspected conspirators highlight the government’s firm stance on national security. With the country still grappling with insurgencies and political instability, the transitional government’s efforts to curb internal threats are expected to intensify. The asset freezes serve as a warning to others who may seek to disrupt the country’s fragile peace during a time of transition.
