Cholera Cases Reported in Eastern Obolo LGA
The Akwa Ibom State Government has confirmed an outbreak of cholera in the fishing community of Emeroke, located in the Eastern Obolo Local Government Area. Residents reported symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, sparking concern in the region. Dr. Patrick Essiet, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, announced this in a statement on Sunday.
Government Mobilizes Health Experts and Supplies
In response to the outbreak, the state epidemiologist has been deployed to Emeroke to begin public awareness campaigns on preventing the disease. Health officials have also visited a local secondary health facility to evaluate the exact number of cases. The Ministry of Health is actively coordinating efforts to control the spread of cholera in the affected community.
Preventive Measures Urged
The government issued guidelines to the public to curb the outbreak. It urged residents to wash their hands properly, especially after using the toilet, boil drinking water before consumption, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms of diarrhea or vomiting. Dr. Essiet emphasized these preventive measures as crucial for mitigating the spread of cholera.
Community Leaders to Enforce Open Defecation Ban
As part of the containment strategy, the Ministry has reminded community leaders to strictly enforce the government’s ban on open defecation. This practice, a significant contributor to cholera outbreaks, poses serious risks to public health. Efforts are underway to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations to protect vulnerable communities.
Short-Term and Long-Term Solutions
The state government is mobilizing essential supplies to the affected area as an immediate intervention. Plans are also being formulated for long-term measures to prevent future outbreaks. These efforts include improving water quality, enhancing sanitation infrastructure, and strengthening community health education programs.
Public Urged to Report Suspected Cases
The Ministry of Health encouraged the public to report suspected cholera cases to the Director of Public Health. It emphasized that prompt reporting helps health officials monitor the outbreak and respond swiftly to new cases. It urged residents to stay vigilant and follow the health advisory to protect themselves and their families.
