The outbreak, which began on Monday, has sent shockwaves through the community as health officials scramble to contain the spread.

During a visit to Iziogo Health Centre, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma, confirmed the deaths and stated that around 20 others are currently receiving treatment. Among the deceased was a nursing mother who left behind a 9-month-old baby. Dr Ekuma emphasized that the state government has swiftly responded to the crisis, aiming to prevent further loss of life.

Ebonyi Government’s Response

Dr Ekuma outlined the measures taken by the Ebonyi State government, including the establishment of three treatment centres in the affected areas—Ndibokote, Sudan Mission, and Onuenyim. Governor Francis Nwifuru has also approved funding to procure medical supplies and support ongoing efforts to manage the outbreak.

Precautionary Measures Urged

As part of the state’s public health campaign, Dr Ekuma advised residents to be cautious and seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting. He urged locals to visit one of the emergency centres at the first sign of illness, stressing that early intervention could save lives.

Rapid Response Efforts Intensified

The state’s rapid response team has been mobilized to the affected areas to provide emergency care and prevent the further spread of cholera. Dr Ekuma praised development partners, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF, for their ongoing support in the fight against the disease.
