Cholera Outbreak in Kirikiri Prison and Katsina State

Lagos State Health Commissioner, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has confirmed 25 cholera outbreak in Kirikiri Medium Security Prison. This announcement contradicts the Nigerian Correctional Service’s recent claim that no cholera cases were present in their facilities.

Response to the Outbreak

Prof. Abayomi reported that immediate medical and environmental measures were taken to contain the outbreak. The Lagos State Ministry of Health, supported by the World Health Organisation, provided intravenous fluids and other essential medical supplies to the affected prison. Additionally, authorities urgently improved water and sanitation facilities.

Cholera Cases in Katsina State

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recorded 118 suspected cholera cases in Katsina State. The NCDC’s data reveals a broader cholera crisis, with 1,528 suspected cases, 65 confirmed cases, and 53 deaths reported across 31 states since the beginning of the year. The most affected states include Bayelsa, Zamfara, and Lagos.

Government’s Multi-Sectoral Approach

In response to the growing epidemic, President Bola Tinubu has established a multi-sectoral cabinet committee headed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate. This committee is tasked with coordinating national efforts to manage and mitigate the spread of cholera.

Tracing the Source

Prof. Abayomi traced the source of the Kirikiri outbreak to unregulated street beverages and contaminated water supplies. Samples from these sources confirmed the presence of cholera bacteria. The Lagos State government is actively working to identify and shut down unregulated production units to prevent further infections.

Public Health Advisory

The public is advised to adhere to health guidelines, maintain good hygiene, and avoid consuming unsafe water. The state governments and health agencies are intensifying public education efforts and improving sanitation practices to curb the spread of cholera.
