Significance of National Environmental Sanitation Day

At an event in Piwoyi, FCT, Permanent Secretary Mahmud Kambari underscored the importance of National Environmental Sanitation Day, for cholera spread prevention. Held annually on June 28, this day aims to raise awareness about the critical role of hygiene in public health.

Combatting Cholera Through Sanitation

Represented by Director Olubunmi Olusanya, Kambari stressed that adopting good sanitation practices is essential in preventing cholera. Cholera, a severe bacterial infection, spreads through contaminated water and food, often due to unhygienic conditions.

Government-Community Partnerships

Kambari assured attendees that the government remains committed to partnering with local communities. These partnerships are vital in ensuring environmental cleanliness and reducing the incidence of cholera outbreaks.

Promoting Hand Washing

Dr. Edwin Edeh from the World Health Organisation highlighted the importance of hand hygiene. He encouraged landlords to include toilets in their buildings and urged community members to wash their hands regularly to maintain good hygiene.

Clean Environment to Prevent Diseases

Jonathan Duku of Breakthrough Action Nigeria emphasized the necessity of keeping the environment clean to prevent diseases. He noted that maintaining cleanliness not only helps combat cholera but also prevents diseases like Lassa fever.

Community Commitment to Sanitation

Lazurus Bahago, the Etsu of Piwoyi community, praised the government’s efforts in raising awareness about sanitation. He committed to working with his team to ensure residents adopt and maintain good environmental sanitation practices.
