A CNG-powered vehicle explosion at the NIPCO filling station in Aduwawa, Benin City, Edo State, has left three people injured. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, involved a vehicle refuelling at the station when the explosion took place, severely injuring a motorist and two others.
Details of the Explosion
Eyewitnesses reported that a fabricated cylinder, created by a welder without proper approval, caused the explosion. One motorist sustained eye injuries, while another person’s foot was amputated, and a woman suffered from a torn abdomen. All three victims are receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
Eyewitness Account
An attendant at the station, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the explosion happened while vehicles were queuing to refill. The injured individuals were quickly rushed to the hospital, and the welder responsible has since turned himself in to the authorities.
Investigation Underway
Technicians at the site were inspecting cylinders before refuelling resumed. However, the station manager declined to comment on the incident. Regulatory authorities and the police have begun investigating the cause and extent of the damage caused by the explosion.
Official Response
The Public Relations Officer of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed that the victims are in stable condition. He emphasised that the hospital is doing everything possible to ensure their recovery.
Safety Concerns and Response
The Presidential CNG Initiative also released a statement expressing sympathy for those injured in the explosion. They underscored the need for strict adherence to safety protocols when dealing with hydrocarbons and announced plans to launch the Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System to enhance CNG safety standards.
