Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States

Geopolitical Shift in the Sahel

Junta-led Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have finalized plans to establish a confederation, distancing themselves from France and seeking closer relations with Russia. Their foreign ministers convened in Niamey, Niger’s capital, to finalize a text establishing the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Subsequently, Niger’s Foreign Minister, Bakary Yaou Sangare, announced the completion of the draft text for the Confederation, which will be formally adopted by the heads of state at an upcoming summit. Moreover, Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop declared the birth of the Confederation after discussions with General Abdourahamane Tiani, head of the Nigerien military regime.
