Federal High Court Nullifies Reinstatement
A Federal High Court in Kano has nullified the reinstatement of Muhammad Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano. This ruling comes barely a month after Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, restored him to the throne. The court also nullified all actions taken following the controversial reinstatement, intensifying the emirate crisis.
Kano Government Vows to Appeal
The Kano State Government has vowed to appeal the judgment. Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, confirmed the government’s intention to challenge the court’s decision. “Yes, it’s going to be appealed,” he stated in a text message to Arewa PUNCH. This move aims to contest the Federal High Court’s ruling and defend the reinstatement of Sanusi.
Legal Battle Over Emirate Law
The court’s judgment followed a suit filed by Aminu Babba Danagundi, a member of the former Kano Emirate. He challenged the removal of the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero. Justice Abdullahi Liman ordered that all steps taken by the government are nullified and invalid. This decision underscores the ongoing legal battle over the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024.
State Government’s Response
In response to the court’s ruling, the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, held a press conference. He stated that the court reaffirmed Sanusi’s reappointment. Dederi emphasized that the ruling upheld the validity of the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024. He also called for the eviction of the deposed Emir Bayero from the Nasarawa palace for reconstruction.
Conflicting Court Orders
The legal tussle has seen multiple conflicting court orders. While the Federal High Court nullified Sanusi’s reinstatement, another court ruling upheld his position. This legal confusion has deepened the emirate crisis in Kano. The state government remains committed to appealing the Federal High Court’s decision and maintaining the rule of law.
Public Reaction and Security Measures
Despite the court’s ruling, Kano city remained calm on Thursday evening. Residents continued their daily activities, with security personnel deployed at strategic locations. The Kano State Police Command has reminded residents of the ban on public protests and unlawful gatherings. Authorities emphasize maintaining peace and order during this contentious period.
