Ejiofor Calls for May 30 Public Holiday
Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the Lead Counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), urges South-East governors to declare May 30 a public holiday. He explains that this date is meant to remember and reflect on the deaths of over five million South Easterners during the Biafra-Nigeria war, which lasted from July 6, 1967, to January 15, 1970.
Honouring Biafran Heroes
In a statement issued on Thursday, Ejiofor emphasises the significance of this day. He proposes it should be dedicated to honouring Biafran heroes and heroines, describing it as a time for introspection. Additionally, he highlights the ongoing relevance of Biafrans in modern-day Nigeria while addressing unresolved issues from the war.
Recognising Past Atrocities
Moreover, Ejiofor highlights the massacre of over 6,000 men in Asaba, Delta State, between October 4 and 7, 1967. He argues that Nigeria must acknowledge this tragedy to genuinely address historical wounds, thereby paving the way for a healing process.
Appeal for a Public Holiday
Calling on all South-East governors to take action, Ejiofor notes that declaring May 30 a public holiday would be a mark of respect for Biafran fallen heroes. He draws a parallel to the South-West’s declaration of June 12 as a public holiday to commemorate the annulled 1993 presidential election, which the Federal Government later adopted as a national holiday.
Release of Biafran Detainees
Furthermore, Ejiofor urges the Federal Government to release Biafran agitators held in various detention facilities. He believes that this gesture would help alleviate the feelings of marginalised Biafrans and promote a sense of reintegration within Nigeria.
Reflecting on Sacrifices
In conclusion, Ejiofor calls for a moment of sober reflection on the sacrifices of Biafran heroes. He emphasises that these individuals did not die for heinous crimes but for a cause that deserves recognition and honour.
