Dele Farotimi Responds after His Release

Human rights advocate, Dele Farotimi, has regained his freedom after fulfilling the conditions set by the Ekiti State court. Farotimi was released on Tuesday morning, following a magistrate court’s decision to grant him bail on December 20, 2024. His bail conditions included a N30 million bond, the submission of his passport, and the provision of two sureties, one of whom had to be a property owner. Farotimi was also prohibited from granting media interviews upon his release.

Farotimi Responds to Allegations

Speaking to the media after his release, Farotimi firmly denied any wrongdoing and maintained that he had never lied about anyone in his life. “In my fight against the evils in this country, I have never lied against anyone,” he said. Farotimi emphasized that truth had always been his weapon, stating that he had always spoken the truth about individuals or institutions. “If I don’t know something, I will admit it,” he added, highlighting the personal sacrifices he had made in the pursuit of justice.

Background of the Charges

Farotimi’s legal troubles started after his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, criticized Nigeria’s justice system. The book accused prominent figures like Afe Babalola of corruption, prompting a defamation lawsuit against Farotimi. Farotimi was arrested in a “Gestapo-like” manner at his Lagos office on December 3, 2024, and taken to Ekiti State.

Defamation and Additional Charges

Initially facing defamation charges in a magistrate court, Farotimi’s legal challenges escalated when the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, filed additional charges against him. The charges included defamation and cyberbullying, and they were brought before an Ekiti Federal High Court on December 6, 2024. The police allege that Farotimi’s book accused Babalola and other SANs of corrupting Justices of the Supreme Court. Farotimi’s legal team has since contested these claims, arguing that the allegations against him are politically motivated.

Public Reactions and Support

Farotimi’s detention and subsequent release have sparked significant public debate. Many human rights activists and members of the public have voiced their support for the lawyer, viewing his arrest as an attempt to stifle dissent and criticism of the powerful. Others have raised concerns about the broader implications of prosecuting individuals for speaking out against corruption. Farotimi’s supporters have praised his steadfastness in standing by his principles, despite the legal and personal challenges he has faced.

The Future of Farotimi’s Legal Battle

While Farotimi’s release is a significant development, his legal battle is far from over. The defamation case and other related charges will continue to unfold in the courts in the coming months. Farotimi, however, remains resolute, stating that the truth will always be his guiding principle. “It is not an easy journey, but the truth will slay the monster that is Nigeria’s corrupt system,” he said, signaling that he would not be deterred in his pursuit of justice.
