Traders Protest Market Demolition in Ughelli North
The Ughelli North Chairman, Jaro Egbo, has assured traders displaced by the recent demolition of market structures of government support. He announced plans for the construction of new stalls and relocation options to help affected traders regain their livelihood. Egbo encouraged traders to organize by their trade categories to facilitate government intervention and minimize disruption to their businesses.
Delta State Government’s Support for Traders
During a meeting with the affected traders, Jaro Egbo, the Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, reassured them of the state government’s commitment to their welfare. Egbo emphasized that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration was deeply concerned about the well-being of the traders. He confirmed that the state government would provide solutions to alleviate the hardship caused by the demolitions. In a bid to offer support, Egbo encouraged the traders to organize themselves into trade categories and submit their details for government assistance.
Plans for New Stalls and Relocation
In response to protests, Egbo announced plans to build new stalls for displaced traders, reclaiming a former dump site. The construction of open and lock-up stalls at the GRA is already underway, with completion imminent. These new stalls will provide secure spaces for displaced traders to resume their businesses once completed.
Closure of Ughelli Main Market for Communal Clash Victims
In a show of solidarity with the community, Egbo declared that the Ughelli Main Market would be closed on Friday, December 6, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The closure is to honor the victims of a recent communal clash between the Ekiugbo and Ihwreko communities. The burial rites for the victims are scheduled for the same day, and the market closure is meant to observe the mourning period.
Praise for Leadership and Community Cooperation
Local residents and business owners praised Chairman Jaro Egbo for his leadership in managing the demolition and relief efforts. Mr. Peter Eferhievwe, a GRA Junction landlord, expressed support for Egbo’s vision of transforming Ughelli North. Eferhievwe encouraged affected traders to cooperate with the council’s directives to help realize the chairman’s goal for growth.
