Council Asserts Monarch’s Innocence
Members of the Traditional Council of Chiefs in Ewu-Urhobo, Delta State, have issued a fervent plea for the immediate release of the detained monarch of Ewu Kingdom, Clement Ikolo. This call emerges as claims assert the monarch’s non-involvement in Okuama’s recent crisis. The incident tragically killed 17 military personnel.
In a statement dated March 30 and shared with PUNCH Online on Tuesday, the Traditional Council of Chiefs vehemently asserted the innocence of the monarch in relation to the ongoing feud between the Okoloba and Okuama communities, as well as the unfortunate incident involving the military personnel.
The statement emphasized, “His Majesty is in no way associated with the ongoing feud between Okoloba and Okuama communities, let alone the tragic killing of military personnel.” It further expressed shock at the arrest of Ikolo, noting his efforts to resolve the crisis since assuming the throne four months ago.
Monarch’s Peace Efforts Highlighted
“Our monarch, His Royal Majesty Ovie Clement Oghenerukevwe Ikolo, the Urhukpe 1, is a peace-loving man who has diligently sought to reconcile the factions within our kingdom since his ascension to the throne four months ago,” the council stated. Additionally, it clarified that Ikolo had not visited either the Okuama community or Ewu, the kingdom’s headquarters, to engage in his royal duties.
Ikolo ranks among the eight individuals the Defence Headquarters declared wanted for the killing. After his arrest, authorities handed him over to the military. This action has sparked concern and protest from the Traditional Council of Chiefs and community members.
Community’s Call For Fairness and Justice
The council extended condolences to the military and the families of the slain officers, while also expressing hope for the swift apprehension of the perpetrators. They emphasized their commitment to peace and reiterated their demand for the immediate release of Ikolo, citing his innocence and dedication to resolving conflicts within the kingdom.
As tensions persist in the aftermath of the tragic incident, the call for the release of the detained monarch underscores the complexities of communal relations and the imperative of ensuring justice while upholding the principles of fairness and innocence until proven guilty.
