Eastern Ukraine Extremely Difficult, Army Unit Says.

Fierce Battles in Chasiv Yar

Fighting around Chasiv Yar, a strategic town in eastern Ukraine, has become “extremely difficult,” according to Ukraine’s 24th Mechanized Brigade. The brigade was redeployed to defend the town as Russia continues to launch “mass frontal attacks” on this key settlement. Chasiv Yar, located west of Bakhmut, has been a focal point of Russian assaults since February.

Russia’s Advances in Donbas

Since early 2024, Russia’s advance in the Donbas region has gained momentum. Ukraine’s under-resourced forces are struggling to hold the line against these relentless attacks. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) states that capturing Chasiv Yar would be “operationally significant” for Russia. This would provide Moscow’s forces with advantageous positions to launch offensives against other key Ukrainian cities in Donbas.

Ukrainian Setbacks and US Support

Ukraine’s recent setbacks have prompted the US to re-evaluate its military support. The Pentagon has granted Kyiv permission to use US-supplied weapons against Russian targets across the border. This change in policy, authorized by President Joe Biden, aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive capabilities against the escalating Russian aggression.

Ongoing Drone and Missile Strikes

Overnight, Russia claimed to have shot down more than 100 Ukrainian drones and destroyed six unmanned boats. Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted oil refineries and key infrastructure in Russia and occupied Crimea. Kyiv argues that these facilities are legitimate targets as they fuel Moscow’s military operations. Meanwhile, Russia continues to hit Ukrainian power plants, leading to rolling blackouts in Ukraine.

Local Impact and Civilian Casualties

In Krasnodar, a heavily targeted region, administrative buildings at an oil refinery were set alight, injuring two people. One person was killed by falling debris in Krasnodar city. Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed successful strikes on multiple oil refineries and important targets. The ongoing conflict has severely impacted civilians, with numerous casualties and widespread destruction.

Strategic Significance of Chasiv Yar

Losing Chasiv Yar would make Ukrainian cities in Donbas more vulnerable to Russian attacks. The hilltop town’s strategic importance cannot be overstated, as its capture would facilitate further Russian advances. The 24th Mechanized Brigade remains determined to defend the town despite the extremely difficult conditions and relentless enemy assaults.
