In a controversial move, 18 members of the Edo State House of Assembly voted to impeach Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. This decision follows a report by a seven-man panel set up by Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa.
During the assembly session, 18 members voted for impeachment, with one abstention, including Speaker Blessing Agbebaku.
The session commenced with the Clerk reading Order 10, initiating consideration of the panel’s report on allegations against Shaibu.
The House meticulously deliberated on the findings, marking the start of the impeachment process against Deputy Governor Shaibu.
Despite objections, the House resolved that while perjury allegations were not proven, leaking official secrets was upheld. Subsequently, the Speaker resumed his role, and a vote was held in accordance with the Constitution’s Section 188 (9).
Following Shaibu’s impeachment, Governor Obaseki appointed Marvellous Omobayo as the new deputy governor. Omobayo, aged 38, was sworn in at Government House, Benin City, by Justice Okungbowa.
Obaseki stressed his commitment to youth empowerment during Omobayo’s swearing-in ceremony. Omobayo pledged to continue the administration’s work and build on its achievements.
