The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State Chapter, has dismissed claims that Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, the individual accused of killing an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer in Awka, is a medical doctor.
In a statement released on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), the NMA’s State Secretary, Dr. Obiaeli Ifeanyi, clarified that Ikechukwu is not a licensed medical doctor or a member of the association. The clarification followed widespread media reports erroneously identifying the suspect as a medical practitioner.
NMA Investigations Expose Misrepresentation
The NMA conducted a thorough investigation to address the allegations linking Ikechukwu to the medical field. According to the findings, the suspect, who reportedly deals in medical supplies, has no affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), where he was initially rumored to work.
“The management of NAUTH has confirmed that Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu is not a staff member,” the statement read. “Additionally, he is not a member of the NMA Awka Zone, and no member has identified him as a colleague.”
Concern Over Tarnished Reputation
The NMA expressed concern about the improper use of the title “medical doctor” by individuals unqualified to bear it. According to Dr. Ifeanyi, such misrepresentations damage the integrity of the medical profession and undermine public trust.
“The attention of the NMA leadership has been drawn to publications wrongly referring to Ikechukwu as a doctor,” the statement continued. “We demand the immediate retraction of all defamatory publications and urge the media to verify claims before dissemination.”
Incident Details and Public Reactions
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka. Early reports mistakenly identified Ikechukwu as a staff member of NAUTH, adding to public confusion about his professional identity.
The misrepresentation has sparked significant reactions online, with many calling for stricter measures against quackery and media inaccuracies. The NMA emphasized the importance of fact-checking, especially when reports involve sensitive issues.
NMA’s Call for Accuracy
The association also extended condolences to the EFCC and the bereaved family, reaffirming the medical profession’s commitment to ethical practices.
“The NMA upholds its reputation as a noble and law-abiding field,” Dr. Ifeanyi concluded. “We urge journalists to exercise caution and diligence to prevent further harm to innocent professionals.”
As investigations continue, the NMA’s clarification underscores the need for accountability in media reporting and a collective effort to protect the sanctity of the medical profession.
