IPC Condemns EFCC’s Actions
The International Press Centre (IPC) called for an investigation into the EFCC’s raid on Urban Radio 94.5FM Enugu. EFCC operatives stormed the station on October 14, 2024, disrupting a live broadcast. They allegedly abducted the host and confiscated equipment during the raid. IPC demands accountability for the incident, citing concerns over media freedom. The IPC described the raid as a “blatant abuse of power” and an attack on press freedom.
EFCC Accused of Unlawful Tactics
Lanre Arogundade, the Executive Director of IPC, issued a strong statement condemning the EFCC’s actions, accusing the commission of resorting to “extra-judicial jungle tactics” to address grievances. This raid is part of a growing pattern of harassment against journalists, raising concerns about media freedom in Nigeria. The IPC has called for accountability and urged EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoye to investigate the conduct of the officers involved in the raid.
Radio Station Details Incident
Following the raid, Urban Radio 94.5FM released a statement alleging that EFCC operatives invaded their studio during a prime-time program. The station claimed that the operatives forcibly removed the host, Favour Ekoh, and seized communication equipment without prior notice. The station alerted the public to this infringement, stating that such actions threaten the integrity of independent journalism in Nigeria.
EFCC Responds with Clarification
The EFCC responded hours after the raid, alleging presenter Favour Ekoh’s involvement in a N700 million Ponzi scheme. They accused Ekoh of luring victims through his program’s advertisements, connecting him to Leverage Index Limited’s fraudulent activities. Sources close to the investigation, however, claimed Ekoh was not formally invited for questioning. This discrepancy sparked further controversy surrounding the EFCC’s actions.
IPC Calls for Accountability
The IPC has urged the EFCC to ensure that those responsible for the unlawful raid are prosecuted. It called for a thorough investigation to determine the truth behind the incident and ensure that justice is served. The centre emphasised that the attack on Urban Radio is not an isolated case, but part of a disturbing trend of media suppression in Nigeria.
Growing Concerns Over Press Freedom
The incident at Urban Radio has reignited the debate about press freedom in Nigeria. Journalists and media organisations have expressed concerns over the increasing interference from security agencies. The IPC, along with other media advocacy groups, continues to pressure the government to safeguard the rights of journalists and hold accountable those who infringe on these freedoms.
