EFCC Returns Recovered Assets to American Victim

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abuja Zonal Command, officially returned property recovered from convicted fraudster Aisosa Kelvin Ohue, also known as Frederick Leonard, to the American victim, Cheryldene Cook. This restitution process further demonstrates EFCC’s commitment to justice and victim support in cases of financial fraud.

EFCC Returns Recovered Assets

The recovered assets, which include N19,000,000 (Nineteen Million Naira), a three-bedroom semi-detached duplex in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, a Lexus E350 saloon car, an iPhone 13 Pro Max, and a Samsung A31 phone, were handed over to Cook in a ceremony in Abuja. The Zonal Commander, ACE I Adebayo Adeniyi, and the Head of the Advanced Fee Fraud Section 1, ACE II Jimoh Rauf, conducted the handover. Cheryldene Cook, who arrived from the United States for the event, was accompanied by her lawyer, Dr. Mike Nwosu. She expressed her gratitude to the Commission for their role in the asset recovery.

Background of the Case

Justice C.E Nwecheonwu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kuje had ordered the forfeiture of the assets earlier this year after Ohue was convicted on a three-count charge of obtaining money under false pretences. Ohue had defrauded Cook by impersonating the popular actor Frederick Leonard in a love scam.

Legal Implications and Public Response

The case had stirred public interest due to its high-profile nature and the involvement of impersonation of a famous actor. It serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of online fraud and the lengths to which scammers will go to deceive their victims.
