Ekiti and Kwara Boundary Dispute Strains

Rising Tensions

The long-standing boundary dispute between Eda Oniyo in Ekiti State and Obbo-Aiyegunle in Kwara State has escalated, turning former allies into adversaries. Both communities now fiercely claim ownership of a contested parcel of land, fueling tensions.

Conflicting Claims

Each community narrates its version of events to assert its ownership of the disputed land. In April, Eda Oniyo accused Obbo-Aiyegunle of invading their territory, vandalising properties, and injuring a farmer. Conversely, Obbo-Aiyegunle refuted these claims, labelling Eda Oniyo as the aggressor.

Escalation and Tragedy

The conflict took a deadly turn on May 18, 2024, when a clash led to the death of 32-year-old Bayo Agbetoke from Eda Oniyo. Both communities offer differing accounts of the circumstances leading to his death, further complicating the dispute.

Government Intervention

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, expressed sorrow over the killing and urged security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. He assured the community of the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and preventing further violence.

Security Measures

Following the boundary dispute and as a security measure, both the Ekiti State government and Kwara government have deployed security agents, for protection and to prevent further attacks.

Path to Resolution

Despite the recent violence, both communities have sought government intervention for a lasting solution. Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye directed a technical committee to investigate the ownership claims, while both state governments promised to resolve the boundary issue peacefully.
