End Ethnic Attacks on Igbos, Ohanaeze Calls

Demanding an Immediate Ceasefire

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the foremost Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has issued a strong call for an end to attacks on the Igbo community, particularly in Lagos State. The National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Chiedozie Ogbonnia, highlighted the recent surge in ethnic slurs and hate speech, including the troubling #IgboMustGo slogan that emerged during a nationwide hunger protest.

Historical Context of Discrimination

The organisation pointed out that this slogan is the latest in a series of targeted attacks against the Igbo in Nigeria, which have included both verbal and physical assaults. Ohanaeze’s statement underscores a pattern of orchestrated ethnic profiling and inflammatory rhetoric that has escalated to the demolition of Igbo properties and threats to their livelihoods in Lagos over the past few years.

Recalling Past Incidents

Ohanaeze recalls several disturbing incidents, including a June 2023 video in which Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, known as ‘MC Oluomo’, urges Igbos to vote for a specific party or abstain from voting. This incitement led to violent acts against those identified as Igbo or mistaken for Igbo during the elections. In 2015, the Oba of Lagos reportedly threatened Igbos with dire consequences if they did not vote for his preferred candidate.

Continued Warnings and Threats

The statement also referenced a warning issued on March 19, 2023, by Bayo Onanuga, advising the Igbo to refrain from interfering in Lagos politics, with a stark warning against repetition in future elections. Despite public backlash, Onanuga refused to apologize for his remarks, indicating a persistent challenge in addressing ethnic tensions.

Commendations for Supportive Voices

In a positive turn, Ohanaeze commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and the Afenifere group for their roles in denouncing the recent attacks and promoting unity. Their statements played a crucial role in preventing further escalation and fostering a climate of respect and safety for all residents, regardless of ethnic background.
