US President Joe Biden has revealed a new Israeli proposal to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza, urging Hamas to accept the deal. Biden stated, “It’s time for this war to end,” emphasising the urgency of the situation.
Three-Part Proposal for Ceasefire
The proposed plan begins with a six-week ceasefire, during which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will withdraw from populated areas in Gaza. This phase will also see a significant increase in humanitarian aid and an exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners. The ultimate goal is to establish a permanent cessation of hostilities and initiate a major reconstruction plan for Gaza.
Positive Response from Hamas
Hamas has responded positively to the proposal. Speaking at the White House, Biden explained that the first phase includes a “full and complete ceasefire” and the exchange of hostages. He described this moment as decisive, giving Hamas an opportunity to prove their commitment to peace. The ceasefire would allow 600 aid trucks into Gaza daily, significantly improving the humanitarian situation.
Support from International Leaders
UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have also urged Hamas to accept the proposal. Cameron emphasised that ending the fighting could lead to permanent peace if all parties take the right steps. Guterres highlighted the extensive suffering in Gaza and called for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and guaranteed humanitarian access.
Challenges Ahead
Biden acknowledged the difficulties in negotiations between the phases. Despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s initial opposition to a ceasefire, Biden’s call for an end to the war signals a significant shift. The proposal, which includes many previously failed elements, aims to draw Hamas back to the negotiating table with a promise of a permanent ceasefire.
Reconstruction and Final Phases
The third phase of the plan involves returning the remains of deceased Israeli hostages and launching a major reconstruction initiative for Gaza. This effort will involve US and international assistance to rebuild homes, schools, and hospitals. Biden’s remarks included a direct appeal to the Israeli people, stressing the importance of seizing this moment for lasting peace.
