#EndBadGovernance: Northern Youth Group Condemns Trial

Youth Group Speaks Out Against Protester Trial

The National Youth Alliance (NYA) condemned the treason trial of minors involved in the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests. NYA President Aliyu Bin Abbas described the treatment of these detainees as “kidnapping,” claiming that the N10 million bail is excessive. He argued that such bail conditions are unreasonable, particularly for minors facing serious charges.

Protesters Face Harsh Treatment

Reports reveal that most of those facing trial are minors, accused of treason for participating in anti-government demonstrations. Speaking at the Northern Youth Summit in Kaduna, where youth from 19 northern states gathered, Abbas voiced his concerns about the trial and demanded that the minors be released. He highlighted that prosecuting them for peaceful protests violates the Child Rights Act.

Allegations of Inhumane Treatment

Abbas expressed outrage over the conditions under which the minors are held, describing their detention as an act of kidnapping. “These boys can barely stand on their feet,” he said, noting that sending them back to jail under such conditions is unjust. He urged the Nigerian government to release them immediately and end their prosecution.

NYA Calls for Reforms and Youth Empowerment

The NYA seized the summit to advocate for a “new Nigeria,” encouraging youth to actively participate in governance. Abbas stated, “We are unsatisfied with the current state of the nation,” emphasising the need for reforms. He called for changes that align with the interests and needs of young Nigerians.

Unity for Change Among Youths

Emphasising unity ahead of the 2027 elections, Abbas stated that the NYA movement is attracting youth from various political affiliations. He urged the younger generation to stand together in demanding governance that reflects their needs, describing current political leaders as “outdated” and detached from the hardships faced by everyday Nigerians.

Commitment to Democracy Despite Challenges

Despite receiving threats from established politicians, Abbas pledged to continue advocating for change through legitimate means. “Nigeria belongs to all of us, especially the younger generation,” he said, calling for a collective effort to defend democracy and drive positive transformation.
