Minors in #EndBadGovernance Protests to Be Released
President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of minors detained for their involvement in August’s #EndBadGovernance protests. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the directive, emphasising Tinubu’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and rights of these youths. This decision reflects a commitment to addressing the legal concerns surrounding their detention. According to Idris, the minors were arrested by the Nigeria Police amid demonstrations against government policies.
Welfare Measures for Affected Youths
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has also been tasked with ensuring the well-being of these minors. Idris noted that President Tinubu instructed the ministry to facilitate the children’s safe return to their families or guardians. “The President’s directive reflects a commitment to the safety and welfare of these young Nigerians,” Idris stated, adding that officials are arranging for their reunion with families across the country.
Investigation into Law Enforcement’s Role
In addition to the release order, Tinubu has called for an investigation into the conduct of law enforcement personnel involved in the arrests and legal proceedings. An administrative committee led by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs will examine the circumstances surrounding the minors’ detention. “Any infraction by government officials will result in disciplinary measures,” Idris asserted, emphasising the administration’s dedication to justice.
Legal Proceedings Under Scrutiny
The decision comes amid public outcry over the detention and trial of at least 76 protesters, including 30 children, facing serious charges like treason and public disturbance. Minors aged 14 to 17 have been held in harsh conditions, with bail set at N10 million, which is beyond reach for most families. Human rights advocates and community leaders have widely condemned the treatment of these minors.
Response to Public Outcry
President Tinubu’s directive comes in response to mounting criticism from both local and international observers. Northern governors and civic groups have urged the government to address detained minors’ plight and uphold their rights. Tinubu’s swift action is seen as a measure to ease tensions related to the #EndBadGovernance protests. His decision also reflects a commitment to protect young demonstrators’ rights.
Renewed Focus on Youth Rights and Governance
The President’s decision signals a renewed focus on youth welfare in Nigeria, especially regarding their participation in civil actions. By ordering the release of detained minors and initiating investigations, Tinubu’s administration appears committed to ensuring that young Nigerians can voice their concerns without facing severe punitive measures. This development highlights the government’s stance on handling protests while respecting legal protections for vulnerable citizens.
