Serious Charges Brought Against Protesters
On Monday, September 2, 2024, the Federal Government arraigned ten #EndBadGovernance protesters at a Federal High Court in Abuja. Authorities had arrested these individuals across Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe. They face charges of treasonable felony, a crime potentially punishable by death. These charges stem from their alleged involvement in activities aimed at destabilising Nigeria. They stand accused of plotting to destabilise Nigeria.
Defendants Plead Not Guilty Amidst Tight Security
Under tight security, the defendants entered their pleas before Justice Emeka Nwite, denying all charges in the six-count indictment. Among the group, individuals like Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye and Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi stood out as prominent figures in the protest movement. They, along with others, vehemently refuted the allegations leveled against them. This high-profile case has drawn significant attention due to the defendants’ roles in the protests.
Legal Challenge Against Detention Orders
The protesters have legally contested the Federal High Court order issued on August 22, 2024, which allowed their preliminary detention. In a suit, they argue that their arrest and subsequent detention were unconstitutional, referencing past peaceful protests led by current President Bola Tinubu.
Rights and Freedoms Under Scrutiny
A consortium of lawyers, including Femi Falana, represents the detainees who claim violations of their rights to life, dignity, health, and freedom of movement. They insist that the court should vacate the remand order, alleging it was based on a misrepresented motion.
Demand for Bail and Fair Treatment
In addition to challenging their detention, the accused have filed for bail, asserting that their remand constitutes a gross abuse of legal process. Their legal team is vigorously pushing for their release, arguing that the basis of their detention was flawed.
Case Continues Amidst Political Tensions
The situation continues to develop, as the defendants and their legal representatives prepare for a protracted legal battle. This case highlights the ongoing tensions between government actions to maintain order and the civil liberties of its citizens.
