Femi Falana Supports Picketing Over Tariff Hike

Femi Falana supports picketing of NERC and DISCOs offices, showing support for Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress. He believes the action is justified under Nigeria’s Labour Act, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder engagement in decision-making processes.

The NLC and TUC sternly warned NERC to reverse the electricity tariff increase or prepare for picketing.

A joint letter, signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC counterpart Festus Osifo, directed state branches to act. They were tasked with mobilizing members for picketing if NERC and the government disregarded their demands. Falana supported this move, citing provisions within Nigeria’s Labour Act.

During his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Falana criticized NERC for insufficient stakeholder engagement and non-conduct of public hearings.
He condemned NERC for implementing tariff increases without involving stakeholders and for lacking public hearing procedures.

He expressed worries about insufficient power provision and doubted the efficacy of privatization within Nigeria’s electricity industry.

Falana emphasized tariff increases must align with improved power supply, as mandated by Section 116 of the Electricity Act 2023. He called for meaningful consultation between the government and workers and cast doubt on the success of privatization in Nigeria.

Falana urged government to reassess power sector strategy, proposing a review of DISCO ownership and control for improvement. Falana expressed apprehension over tariff increases at a time when many Nigerians continue to grapple with power shortages.
