FG Denounces Niger’s Allegations of Collusion with France

FG Refutes Niger’s Accusations

The Federal Government of Nigeria strongly rejects General Abdourahamane Tchiani’s allegations of colluding with France to destabilize Niger. The junta leader accused Nigeria of supporting Lakurawa terrorists and hosting training camps on its territory. These allegations were aired on Niger’s state television and have been firmly denied by Nigeria’s government.

Allegations Called Baseless

Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, dismissed the claims as baseless and emphasized Nigeria’s peaceful relations with neighbors. He called it absurd to suggest Nigeria would conspire with foreign powers to harm its neighbors. Idris firmly rejected the allegations, highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.

Regional Leadership in Security

Idris highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to regional security, referencing efforts such as Operation Forest Sanity III, aimed at countering the Lakurawa terrorist threat. “Nigeria has been a regional leader in combating terrorism, dedicating significant resources and lives to ensure stability in the Lake Chad Basin and beyond,” he asserted.

Nigeria’s Diplomatic Role

As Chair of ECOWAS, President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated leadership in addressing the political instability in Niger following the July 2023 coup. Idris reiterated that Nigeria remains focused on fostering peace and maintaining historical ties with Niger, dismissing Tchiani’s claims as an attempt to deflect attention from domestic challenges.

Sovereignty and Stability

The Nigerian government firmly denied any cession of territory or involvement in subversive activities. It also criticized the Niger junta’s allegations as a “dangerous attempt to divert attention” from its own shortcomings. “Nigeria has a long-standing tradition of safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Idris affirmed.

Commitment to Regional Peace

The FG urged Niger’s leadership to prioritize constructive dialogue and collaboration. “President Tchiani’s allegations are unfounded and counterproductive,” Idris said, adding that Nigeria will continue leading efforts to address terrorism and regional instability. “We urge Niger to focus on fostering regional peace rather than peddling baseless accusations.”
