FG to Open Student Loan Portal on May 24, 2024

Announcement of Student Loan Portal Opening

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) has announced that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) will officially open the portal for student loan applications on May 24, 2024. Nasir Ayantogo, the media lead for NELFund, shared this significant update in a statement. The initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring accessible and inclusive education for all Nigerian students.

Ayantogo stressed the portal’s opening as pivotal for realizing President Tinubu’s vision for education reform. On June 12, 2023, President Tinubu signed the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023, into law. The law intends to offer interest-free loans to financially needy students, enabling them to attend any Nigerian tertiary institution. The legislation aims to provide interest-free loans to financially disadvantaged students. This facilitates their enrollment in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Initial Launch Plans and Delays

Initially, the government planned to launch the scheme in September. However, several delays occurred, leading to its indefinite postponement in early March. The Presidency linked delays to Tinubu’s directive to expand the scheme. This includes loans for vocational skills, enhancing educational funding.

On January 22, after receiving a briefing from the NELFund team led by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, President Tinubu instructed that the Fund should extend interest-free loans to students interested in skill-development programs. He stressed the importance of accommodating those who may not wish to pursue traditional university education, highlighting the essential role of skill acquisition in national development.

Loan Purview

President Tinubu underscored that the program aims to support all young Nigerians, including those with vocational aspirations. He stated, “This program is inclusive, catering to all of our young people, whether they aspire to become doctors, lawyers, accountants, or skilled tradespeople.” He emphasized the importance of nurturing diverse talents and skill sets to build the nation. In line with this vision, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund will incorporate skill-development programs into its offerings, ensuring students can access financial support regardless of their educational or vocational paths.

The statement further encourages all eligible students to utilize this opportunity to invest in their futures and contribute to the nation’s growth and development.
