The Nigerian government has firmly denied reports suggesting any contemplation of foreign military base establishment within the country. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, issued a statement on Monday, refuting as “false” certain reports circulating in various circles regarding discussions about potential foreign military installations on Nigerian soil.

Recent concerns expressed by northern leaders in a letter cautioning President Bola Tinubu underscored apprehensions about the potential relocation of military bases from the Sahel region by the United States and French governments to Nigeria. Consequently, these leaders warned that such a move could pose significant security risks to the nation.
Minister Idris reiterated the government’s stance, emphasizing that no deliberations are taking place with any foreign nation regarding the establishment of foreign military bases in Nigeria. He stressed that Nigeria has not received nor is it considering any proposals from foreign countries concerning the establishment of such bases within its borders.
Furthermore, Minister Idris underscored the existing cooperation between Nigeria and its foreign partners in addressing ongoing security challenges. He reaffirmed the President’s commitment to strengthening these collaborative efforts, aligning them with the national security objectives outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda.
