Arrest and Location
Daniel Abed Khalife, 21, a former soldier who escaped from Wandsworth Prison in London while awaiting trial on terrorism charges, was arrested on Saturday morning. The arrest occurred in the Battersea area of south London, bringing an end to his brief period on the run since Wednesday.
Escape Method
Police believe Khalife escaped by attaching himself to the underside of a food delivery truck leaving the prison’s kitchen. The truck transported him about a mile away, where he detached himself to complete his escape.
Nationwide Manhunt
In the wake of his escape, a nationwide manhunt was initiated. Extra security measures were implemented at airports and seaports, and police disseminated images of Khalife to solicit public assistance in locating him.
Arrest Details
The Metropolitan Police announced that Khalife was apprehended “without incident” and is currently in custody. He is scheduled for a court appearance on Monday.
Security Questions at Wandsworth Prison
The incident has led to scrutiny of security measures at Wandsworth Prison, a medium-security facility where Khalife was being held on terrorism charges. An urgent investigation into the circumstances of his escape is underway.
Previous Escapes Raise Concerns
This marks the second instance in recent months where a terrorism suspect has escaped from a British prison. In July, Usman Khan escaped from HMP Belmarsh in London and was subsequently killed by police. These events have triggered concerns about the overall security of UK prisons.
Government Response
In an official statement, the Ministry of Justice reassured the public, stating, “We are committed to ensuring the safety of the public and those in our prisons. We have robust security measures in place, but we are always looking at how we can improve them.”
