Gavi Secures Mpox Vaccine for Africa
Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, has made a significant move to combat the spread of mpox in Africa by purchasing 500,000 doses of the Bavarian Nordic vaccine. This marks Gavi’s first major acquisition of the mpox vaccine, which comes in response to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of mpox as a global health emergency. The vaccines will primarily be distributed to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other affected African nations.
$50 Million Investment to Combat Mpox
The global vaccine alliance announced a plan to invest up to $50 million for the purchase, transportation, delivery, and administration of these vaccines. Gavi’s initiative will significantly bolster vaccination efforts in the DRC, which has been severely impacted by the outbreak. Despite previous pledges of 3.6 million vaccine doses to the DRC, authorities have only delivered a small portion. Gavi’s purchase aims to accelerate this process.
Urgent Response to the Outbreak
Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, emphasised the need to quickly turn vaccine supplies into actual vaccinations. “The goal is to ensure the vaccines reach those most in need without delay,” she stated. Mpox, which spreads through close contact, continues to pose a public health risk not only in Africa but also in Europe, the Americas, and other regions. Gavi’s effort is expected to provide crucial support in curbing the disease’s spread.
Focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo remains one of the hardest-hit countries in Africa. Gavi’s focus on the DRC is critical as the country has faced challenges in receiving enough vaccines to cover its population.
