Gaza Ceasefire: Blinken Says Fate Lies on Hamas

US Pushes for Ceasefire

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has declared that the fate of the Gaza ceasefire plan rests with Hamas. Speaking on the latest developments, Blinken reiterated his call for Hamas to accept the proposal outlined by President Biden 11 days ago. He emphasised that the responsibility lies with “one guy” hiding “ten storeys underground in Gaza,” referring to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

Netanyahu’s Position

Blinken confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment to the ceasefire proposal during their talks in Jerusalem. However, Netanyahu has not publicly endorsed the plan nor clarified if it aligns with Israel’s proposal, which President Biden’s announcement was based on. This uncertainty complicates the situation, as Netanyahu navigates internal political pressures.

UN Resolution and Hamas’s Response

The UN Security Council passed a resolution supporting Biden’s proposal, which Blinken described as a “hopeful sign.” Hamas issued a statement welcoming elements of the resolution, but Blinken noted that this response was not conclusive. He stressed that the ultimate decision rests with the Hamas leadership in Gaza, highlighting the importance of a clear commitment from them.

Biden’s Announcement

President Biden’s public announcement last month outlined an Israeli “roadmap to an enduring ceasefire and the release of all hostages.” This plan, reportedly more detailed than what Biden presented, has not been made public. The Israeli proposal, agreed upon by the war cabinet, has faced opposition from far-right ministers, and Netanyahu has yet to state his direct support for it.

Hamas’s Conditions

Following Biden’s announcement, Hamas indicated it would consider any proposal ending the war, ensuring the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and facilitating the return of displaced people and the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners. However, they have not explicitly accepted or rejected the plan, maintaining a stance that adds to the ongoing tension.

The Ongoing Conflict

The conflict, which began with Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October, has resulted in significant casualties. According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, over 37,000 people have been killed in the Israeli offensive. The situation remains volatile, with international efforts focused on achieving a lasting ceasefire and resolving the humanitarian crisis.
