Gombe Cannot Afford New Minimum Wage- Inuwa Yahaya

Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has stated that due to limited state allocations, it cannot afford the new minimum wage recently approved N70,000 minimum wage. This wage increase, endorsed by President Bola Tinubu, was agreed upon following discussions with joint labour unions.

During a meeting with stakeholders at the Gombe Government House on Tuesday, Governor Yahaya remarked, “I cannot pay the N70,000 minimum wage, and I suspect many other states are in the same predicament.”

While acknowledging the Federal Government’s initiative to supply rice to states, Yahaya voiced concerns over the delay in receiving these vital supplies in Gombe. He said, “We are yet to receive the Federal Government’s 20 trucks of rice to Gombe State.”

Despite these challenges, Governor Yahaya reaffirmed the state’s dedication to providing relief to its citizens. He highlighted ongoing efforts in human capital development, education, health, and agriculture. Additionally, he mentioned previous palliative distributions as part of the state’s commitment to its people.

Regarding the planned nationwide #Endbadgovernance protest, Yahaya emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and order. He recognised the contributions of civil society organisations, labour unions, and traders in ensuring social stability and economic resilience.

In conclusion, Yusuf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Gombe Network of Civil Society Organisations, presented a list of demands on behalf of Non-Governmental Organisations. He urged the governor to disclose the inventory of stocked palliatives.
