On Saturday, states across Nigeria were shrouded in darkness once again as the national electricity grid suffered another collapse series, dropping sharply to just 70.60 megawatts by 4 pm.
Repeated Failures in 2024
This marks the seventh collapse of the national grid this year, with previous incidents recorded on February 4, March 11, March 12, March 28, April 10, and April 15.
Presidential Concerns
During the inauguration of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu lamented the state of Nigeria’s energy security, describing the persistent low electricity generation as shameful.
Drastic Drop in Generation
According to data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), electricity generation initially rose to 3,976.24MW before sharply declining to 70.60MW by late afternoon. The Trans-Amadi Gas Turbine Power Plant in Rivers State was the sole supplier at 0.80MW during this period.
DisCo Challenges
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the grid’s collapse, impacting services across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. Similar disruptions were reported by other distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide.
Stakeholder Responses and Calls for Action
Various stakeholders, including consumer rights advocates and business leaders, expressed dismay over the frequent grid failures. They called for urgent measures to upgrade the power infrastructure to ensure stable electricity supply across the country.
