Deadly Attack on Abia State Checkpoint
In a tragic early-morning assault on Wednesday, two soldiers lost their lives at an army checkpoint in Ekenobizi, Umuopara, a community on the Imo/Abia border in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State. The attack reportedly occurred around 6:18 a.m. as gunmen driving a white Lexus vehicle targeted the checkpoint. The exact number of assailants remains unknown.
Joint Task Force’s Response
Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu, representing the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA, issued a statement confirming the incident. He noted that the checkpoint, situated along the Umuahia-Owerri Road, came under siege by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). Troops engaged in a fierce gun battle, forcing the attackers to retreat.
Vehicles Abandoned as Gunmen Flee
During the encounter, the attackers reportedly sustained injuries as the Joint Task Force repelled the assault. They abandoned two vehicles—a Lexus and a Sienna minivan—at the scene before fleeing. Tragically, two soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty during the confrontation.
Call for Public Assistance
The Joint Task Force has appealed to the South-East community, specifically Abia State residents, to assist in identifying the perpetrators. Authorities are asking anyone with credible information that could lead to the apprehension of the attackers to step forward, emphasizing the critical role public cooperation plays in securing the region.
