Herdsmen Attack on Ebonyi Community Rises to 15

More Casualties Discovered in Nkalaha Villages

The recent herdsmen attack on Ebonyi State community has claimed 15 lives. Suspected armed herdsmen carried out the invasion on Sunday morning, killing 10 people and burning several houses. New findings in nearby bushes have uncovered more casualties, and many residents are still missing. The death toll continues to rise as investigations unfold.

Government Issues Ultimatum to Security Agencies On Tuesday, Ebonyi State Deputy Governor, Princess Patricia Obila, visited the affected communities and expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident. Representing Governor Francis Nwifuru, she condemned the killings and issued a 24-hour ultimatum to security agencies to track down the perpetrators.

“No government is happy to witness such senseless bloodshed. These are innocent lives lost in a gruesome manner. The security forces must act immediately to ensure justice,” Obila stated. She also urged community youth leaders to promote peace rather than retaliate, emphasizing the importance of unity and security cooperation.

Calls for Fasting and Prayers in the Community

The Deputy Governor further advised the Nkalaha community to observe three days of fasting and prayers for divine intervention. She expressed confidence that spiritual efforts could bring peace and healing to the affected villages.

“There is nothing that God cannot do. I encourage the community to seek divine guidance and restoration during this difficult time,” she added. Obila also commended security personnel for their prompt response, stressing that without their efforts, the casualty figure could have been even higher.

Traditional Ruler Raises Alarm Over Rising Insecurity

Igwe Thompson Ebe, the traditional ruler of Nkalaha, revealed that tensions between the community, Fulani herdsmen, and the Agila people of Benue State had been escalating since January 20. According to him, efforts were made to mediate the conflict, including inviting the involved parties to Abakaliki for dialogue. Despite these peace initiatives, the attacks persisted, culminating in Sunday’s massacre.

“We have been working to address the disputes, even making arrests where necessary. However, this senseless attack has now claimed 15 lives, and we are still searching for two missing persons,” Igwe Ebe lamented.

Security Agencies Urged to Act Swiftly

As the community mourns its dead, residents are calling for swift and decisive action from security forces to prevent further violence. The Ebonyi State government has reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, humanitarian efforts are underway to support displaced families and survivors, with local organizations and government agencies providing aid to those affected by the crisis. The situation remains tense, as locals fear the possibility of more attacks if security measures are not strengthened immediately.
