Inibehe Effiong Criticises Police for Chioma Edoka’s Arrest

Introduction

Human Rights Lawyer Inibehe Effiong has taken to Twitter to express his outrage over the arrest of Chioma Edoka. The arrest, allegedly instigated by Erisco Foods Limited, has raised serious questions about the conduct of the Nigerian Police and the ethical responsibilities of corporations.

Legal and Ethical Concerns

Inibehe Effiong pointed out that the police violated Section 45 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 2015, and Section 37 of the Nigerian Constitution by searching Chioma’s phone without court authorization. He questioned the legality of such actions, stating that even if the police were investigating a possible cybercrime, court permission is required.

Coercion and Dubious Intent

Effiong also criticised the police for taking Chioma to her bank to obtain her statement of account against her will. He described this as a “dubious fishing expedition” aimed at finding incriminating evidence. When they found nothing, they resorted to coercing her into writing an apology letter.

Questioning Police Conduct

The lawyer questioned the necessity of taking Chioma to Abuja for the investigation, especially when both she and the company involved are based in Lagos. He accused the police of sacrificing common sense law enforcement because a billionaire was the petitioner.

Call for Legal Action

Effiong urged the Force PRO to proceed to court if they believe Chioma committed a crime, rather than resorting to extrajudicial measures. He called the actions of the police a “shame” and criticised them for dissipating public funds on a frivolous case.
