Ibadan and Lagos Workers, organized under the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, staged a protest against the Band A tariff hike by storming electricity distribution company offices. They stormed electricity distribution company offices to voice their discontent, obstructing workers from resuming their duties on Monday, aiming to draw attention to their demands.
Moreover, in Lagos, protesters gathered at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company’s corporate headquarters, chanting and advocating for the reversal of the Band A tariff. Similarly, scenes unfolded in Ibadan, where workers picketed the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company’s office, echoing calls for the Band A tariff rollback.
Security personnel were deployed to prevent potential disturbances, reflecting the tense atmosphere surrounding the protests. The NLC and TUC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, demanding a reversal of the tariff adjustments.
However, the Federal Government expressed concerns regarding a tariff rollback, citing potential negative impacts on the power sector. They emphasized the need for stability and cautioned against hasty decisions that could disrupt the sector’s functioning.
In contrast, the International Monetary Fund advised the government to eliminate electricity subsidies across various tariff bands to protect the economy. They highlighted the importance of fiscal responsibility and suggested measures to ensure long-term economic sustainability.
