Victims Express Frustration Over Government Inaction
Nine months after a deadly explosion rocked the Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State, victims are still grappling with the aftermath of the incident. The explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2024, claimed five lives, left 77 injured, and damaged 58 houses. Affected residents gathered this week to voice their frustrations over the government’s failure to provide adequate assistance, leaving many displaced and without homes.
Homes Destroyed and Lives Disrupted
The explosion, caused by illegal storage of mining explosives by a Malian resident, devastated the community, with the impact stretching across the city. Residents say their homes remain in ruins, overgrown with weeds and infested with wild animals. Speaking under the Dejo Oyelese Vigilante Group, the victims called on the federal and state governments to do more to alleviate their suffering, as many are still forced to live with friends and relatives.
Call for Justice and Prevention of Future Incidents
The victims also called for justice, urging the continued prosecution of those responsible for the explosion. They stressed the need for stronger measures to prevent illegal mining activities in residential areas to avoid a repeat of the tragedy. “Justice must be served, not just for us but to deter future incidents,” they stated.
Compensation Claims Stalled
The residents expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in receiving compensation for the damages they suffered. Despite submitting a list of material losses to the government nine months ago, they claim there has been no follow-up or action taken. They urged the Oyo State government to expedite the process and provide the promised support.
Senior Citizens Left Stranded
Most of the affected victims are elderly, who now find themselves unable to rebuild their homes or start over. Many have exhausted their resources trying to cope with the situation. “We are in distress and have no means to rebuild our homes from scratch at this stage of our lives,” they lamented.
Appeal for Continued Support
In closing, the residents reiterated their plea to the government for immediate action. They emphasised that without support, their recovery would remain out of reach, leaving them to bear the long-term consequences of the disaster.
