IGP Denies Claims of Submitting Dual Budgets to the House

IGP Clears Air on Budget Presentation Drama

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has denied allegations that the Nigeria Police Force submitted two different versions of its 2025 budget proposal to the National Assembly. Speaking after a contentious session with the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions in Abuja on January 16, 2025, Egbetokun described the misunderstanding as “unnecessary drama that could have been avoided.”

Clarification on Budget Versions

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP presented two documents to the committee: a comprehensive version and an abridged version, both containing identical figures and facts. The abridged version was created to simplify technical jargon for easier understanding. Committee members had unanimously agreed to proceed with the abridged version since they already had access to the comprehensive document.

However, Senator Onyekachi Nwoebonyi, who arrived late to the session, referenced the comprehensive version, causing confusion. Despite efforts to clarify the situation, the senator abruptly left the meeting, sparking speculation about discrepancies in the budget presentation.

IGP Denies Misinformation

Egbetokun firmly dismissed rumors that the police force submitted conflicting budget proposals. “The Nigeria Police Force did not submit two different 2025 budgetary proposal documents to the National Assembly. The reports circulating are misleading and inaccurate,” he emphasized.

Challenges in Police Funding

The IGP highlighted persistent challenges with the police budget, including inadequate allocations and delays in fund releases. These issues, he noted, hinder the force’s ability to meet its expanding responsibilities in maintaining security nationwide.

Appeal for Public Support

Despite the challenges, the police remain committed to professionalism and service delivery. Egbetokun urged Nigerians to support the force, stressing the importance of collaboration between the public and law enforcement in addressing the country’s security needs.
