The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) has recently made an announcement regarding a reduction in the tariff for its Band A customers, as it slashes tariff to N206.80/kWh from the previously approved N225/kWh. Olufadeke Omo-Omorodion, the spokesperson for IKEDC, conveyed this information in a notice released on Monday.
Effective from Monday, May 6, 2024, the downward revision of the Band A tariff accompanies a commitment from the DisCo to provide Band A customers with a minimum of 20-hour daily power supply, highlighting their dedication to maintaining service quality. Despite this reduction, it’s pertinent to acknowledge that the tariffs for customers in other bands (B, C, D, and E) remain unchanged.
This decision to lower the tariff for Band A customers follows the NERC’s initial revision of electricity tariffs for this category, which surged from N68 per kilowatt-hour to N255/KWh on April 3rd. The increase elicited dissatisfaction among consumers, particularly those classified as Band A, who cited financial strain due to the heightened electricity tariffs.
Since the introduction of the supplementary Multi-Year Tariff Order, consumers categorized as Band A have voiced their concerns regarding the financial burden imposed by the tariff hike. They have urged the Federal Government to reassess the policy. However, during an investigative hearing before the Senate Committee on Power last week Monday, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, issued a warning about the potential for a nationwide blackout within the next three months if the electricity tariff hike is not implemented.
