Intercepted Arms of N13.9 Billion a Significant Seizure by NCS

Massive Arms Seizure at Onne Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced a significant seizure, as it intercepted nine containers loaded with arms, ammunition, illicit drugs, and second-hand clothes valued at N13.9 billion. Operatives at the Onne Port in Rivers State intercepted the shipment, according to Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi.

Targeted Container from Turkey

Adeniyi disclosed that one container, originating from Turkey, attracted the interest of customs officials due to several risk factors. “We tracked its journey across continents with the aid of intelligence from various national and international agencies,” he explained. On June 21, 2024, officials thoroughly examined the container and revealed 844 units of assorted rifles and 12,500 rounds of live ammunition concealed among doors, furniture fittings, and leather bags.

Successful Arrests

Authorities have apprehended three suspects in connection with this shipment. They estimated the duty-paid value of this particular container at N4.2 billion. Adeniyi noted that the importer attempted to bypass standard procedures by routing the shipment through a private bonded terminal.

Additional Interceptions

On June 22, 2024, NCS officers intercepted eight more containers. Six of these contained 1.5 million bottles of codeine cough syrup and 3.5 million tablets of tramadol, with a combined duty-paid value of N9.6 billion. The total value of the nine containers seized stands at N13.9 billion.

Joint Border Patrol Success

Furthermore, on June 28, 2024, the Joint Border Patrol Team Sector 2 of NCS intercepted 1,410 litres of premium motor spirit worth N30.4 million within a week. This interception highlights the ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities at Nigeria’s borders.
