The Military High Command vows decisive retaliation for the killing of five soldiers at a checkpoint in Aba, Abia State, during the IPOB sit-at-home on May 30. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, announced this commitment in a statement released on Friday in Abuja.
Armed assailants ambushed and killed the soldiers at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area near Aba. The Nigerian army reports that the soldiers stationed there maintained peace and protected citizens in the area. The attackers, arriving in three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs, caught the soldiers off guard.
In addition to those in the SUVs, others were hiding in the surrounding built-up areas, launching a coordinated surprise attack on the checkpoint. This assault tragically resulted in the loss of five military personnel.
