US Diplomatic Efforts to Calm Middle East Tensions
The United States is working to reduce escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly in light of fears that Iran might retaliate against Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, emphasised this during a UN Security Council meeting, stating that Washington’s goal is to “turn the temperature down” in the region.
Focus on Preventing Regional Conflict
In her address, Thomas-Greenfield stressed the US’s commitment to deterring and defending against any potential attacks while avoiding a broader regional conflict. Her comments came as concerns mount over the possibility of Iranian aggression in response to the July killing of Haniyeh in Tehran, an event Israel has not officially acknowledged.
US President Supports Ceasefire Efforts
US President Joe Biden has indicated that achieving a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could help prevent further escalation. While expressing cautious optimism, Biden noted that the situation remains fluid, with the US closely monitoring Iran’s actions.
Ceasefire Talks and Diplomatic Challenges
A new round of ceasefire negotiations is set to take place in Doha or Cairo, though reports suggest Hamas may not participate. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed a planned trip to the Middle East to engage in these critical talks, aimed at securing a deal that includes the release of hostages.
US Arms Sales to Israel Amid Rising Tensions
Meanwhile, the US has approved a $20 billion arms sale to Israel, including fighter jets and military equipment, as part of its efforts to bolster Israel’s defence capabilities. This move signals Washington’s commitment to supporting Israel amid ongoing threats from Iran and its proxies.
Global Reactions and Iranian Rejection
At the Security Council meeting, Iran rejected Western calls to refrain from retaliating against Israel, further intensifying the situation. The US has warned of potential Iranian attacks and has increased its military presence in the region to defend Israel, highlighting the precarious nature of the current situation.
